Drive By Yoga

Bikram Yoga founder Bikram Choudhury doesn’t agree with the argument that yoga practitioners should live simple lives. “Where is it written that a yogi is not supposed to have a car or a diamond wrist watch?” he replied when a Boston Globe reporter asked how Choudhury felt about the controversy that surrounds his 35 Rolls-Royces and Bentleys.

Choudhury loves his cars. In the one short interview he said he studies cars when he needs a break from studying the human body and explained the use of heat in his yoga classes by likening the human body to a Ferrari. When the body is warm it can reach it’s true potential, like a Ferrari driving on the highway with no other cars–or police officers–around.

If you’ve ever practiced Bikram Yoga (or another type of yoga in a heated room) do you notice a difference?

Retreat Yoga: For the Bikram Addict

Retreat Yoga: Better Than Your Yoga Practice

Retreat Yoga offers can be found all over the internet these days, but why should you avail of these? Is taking regular yoga practice not enough? Retreats are better than ordinary practices in a number of ways:

1.    As going on a retreat entails that you free your schedule, you will have much more time for doing yoga.

2.    As yoga retreats are advertised throughout the whole America, there will be a variety of peoples attending these. Thus, it would be a good place to make friends with your fellow yoga enthusiasts.

3.    Classes are smaller during retreats, so yoga instructors will have more time to cater to you and your needs.

4.    Going to a retreat is like taking a vacation in paradise. There is no specific timeline to follow, so you can opt to spend time alone relaxing and reflecting in between yoga sessions.

How to Join a Yoga Retreat: For all you Bikram Addicts Out There

So, for all you Bikram yogis out there, there are many retreats that specialize in Bikram Yoga. All you need to do is search for them on the internet, and sign up. Here are a few things to prepare for and expect when joining a Bikram retreat:

1.    Be sure to arrange your flight schedule and transportation from the airport to the retreat venue because the retreat organizers are usually not in charge of this.

2.    Be sure to bring all your yoga equipment, travel documents, and identification papers, to avoid any inconvenience.

3.    Be ready to stay on a vegetarian diet for the duration of your retreat (most yogis are vegetarians), and to share a room with other participants (unless you want to spend more money).

With all these things in mind, all you Bikram addicts out there should be ready for retreat yoga— a yoga experience in paradise.

Why Bikram Yoga is Practice in a Heated Room

bikram yoga hot
Bikram yoga is literally hot. During bikram yoga classes, you enter a room that has a temperature of 40 degrees Celsius. That’s hotter than the typical summer day on a tropical country.

The heated room is what differentiates bikram yoga from other kinds of yoga. The room is heated because heat quickly relaxes your muscles making your muscles more flexible. Do you notice why we use heat lotions or hot topical creams as first aid for sore muscles? It’s because heat relaxes our muscles. It expand our muscles and make them ready for longer stretches.

When the room is hot and we’re performing yoga poses, we sweat a lot. The sweating causes the toxins to get out of our body. After the heavy sweating of yoga , we feel exhilarated and light primarily because the toxins that have been in our body for a long time was excreted.

When our ligaments, tissues and muscles are heated, they tend to be stronger against injuries. When we are about to perform a physical activity such as jogging or dancing, we are advised to perform warm-up exercises. Warm-up exercises will do just that to our muscles—warm them up and this will help us prevent injuries.

Bikram yoga started in India and the temperature in India which is very high is makes the yogis there very flexible. This is why a heated room is used for this kind of yoga. It provides the natural temperature that the yogis in India get and the temperature helps in the deep stretches of the yoga asanas.

Most Successful Men Do Yoga

My instructor in Bikram yoga has been in that kind of business for ten years now, and I must say that he belongs to men who became successful because of doing yoga. I can practically say that yoga does change a man to a more efficient and focused worker, or perhaps, businessman.

Everybody who is inviting a friend to a yoga class reiterates that yoga can help anyone who practices it to develop his mental focus and balance in everything that he does in life. Since yoga involves mental activities, it gives too much reservations to the mind that step-by-step plans whether in career or personal life should be thought, prepared and done very carefully in aiming for sure success.

I just realized that most of successful men I know do yoga, Bikram in particular. There is n great wonder why these people achieve success in whatever endeavor they have because of positive minds that they carry with them. My instructor actually agree with me every time I tell this to my friends. He says that even those who are not into business succeed in life because yoga can undoubtedly help them keep a positive outlook in life, good plans and thorough actions toward their endeavor.

In all yoga poses, there are various focuses. These poses are done for a certain purpose but generally, the mind always go through a process of deep concentration where positivity in thoughts and actions can get improved. On the other hand, anyone can achieve success in anything that he does if this positive mind and action are with him.

Did I Improve?

Christmas is just around the corner and everyone seems excited about celebrating the 25th of December. My family, in fact is preparing a lot of gifts and great presents for our loved ones. I attended my yoga class last week and got surprised with some adjustments on schedule because of the season. What thrilled me most during my last yoga class was my instructor’s unique way of yoga class.

My yoga instructor told us how the class would be a little different from the others that we usually do. He then asked us several questions that truly went inside me. Since the end of the year is approaching, he gave us the chance to reflect on a lot of matters concerning ourselves and other people who might be our family, friends, officemates, or just ordinary acquaintances. Questions also talked about our physical conditions, interests and routines that greatly affect our mind and body.

He asked us different questions which we answered by ourselves quietly. These are some of those:

• Am I stressed?
• Do I have an injury that is uneasy to get healed?
• Do I have enough energy for my work and other activities?
• Do I need to lose or gain weight?
• How do I look myself today?
• Do I always get angry easily to people around me?
• Do I experience back pain?
• Do I have a high cholesterol level?
• Do I have trouble getting slept?
• Am I happy with what I am doing?
• Do I find time to spend the day with people special to me?
• How do I treat people?

Our instructor reminded us that these questions may help us evaluate ourselves as well as our mind and body improvement. He told us that having the proper state of mind and body can give us a healthy spirit to do various things confidently and happily.

He then advised us that if we think we’ve answered negatively on a lot of questions, then another year is yet to come for us to exert a little more effort on helping ourselves get better inside and out.
