What To Bring In Your Yoga Class

Is it your first time to go to your yoga class? Knowing that it’s your first time, you are quite unaware on what to bring and what not to bring. Most probably you are researching now on those things and other facts about yoga. Don’t worry, there are minimal preparation required. Let me share to you the essentials of yoga. Here are the things you should bring to class:

1. Your own yoga mat

Some studios allow you to use the yoga mats they have. Although these mats are also used by other students. To be more hygienic, it would be better to bring your own. If you don’t have one yet, don’t be in a hurry. You can use the one in the studio and just cover it with towel until you get to buy your own mat.

2. A pair of warm socks

You don’t necessarily need to wear your socks the entire time. In fact, yoga is best practiced barefoot. The socks you bring will only be used at the end of your class meditation. Your feet might feel cold after the warm yoga class that’s why it is advisable to wear socks to protect it from chills.

3. Sweatshirt

Wear your sweatshirt at the start of the class for your body to sweat even more. When you feel     that it heats you up already, that’s the time you remove your sweatshirt. You can put back on your sweatshirt at the end of the session, since it will feel a bit cold right after leaving the yoga     room as you enter an air-conditioned room.

4. Bottle of water

In yoga, you will sweat big time. Like in any other sports you try, it is important that you replenish and hydrate your body by drinking water.

5. Towel

Since you will sweat a lot, be hygenic and wipe out those sweat from your face and body. A towel will help you out rather than looking all wet and soaked with perspiration after the class.     You can also bring an extra towel for your mat, in case you will be using one from the studio.

6. An open mind

People who never tried yoga can discourage you to pursue yoga classes. I suggest that you give it a try and have an open mind. See how yoga can benefit your health and body.

Drive By Yoga

Bikram Yoga founder Bikram Choudhury doesn’t agree with the argument that yoga practitioners should live simple lives. “Where is it written that a yogi is not supposed to have a car or a diamond wrist watch?” he replied when a Boston Globe reporter asked how Choudhury felt about the controversy that surrounds his 35 Rolls-Royces and Bentleys.

Choudhury loves his cars. In the one short interview he said he studies cars when he needs a break from studying the human body and explained the use of heat in his yoga classes by likening the human body to a Ferrari. When the body is warm it can reach it’s true potential, like a Ferrari driving on the highway with no other cars–or police officers–around.

If you’ve ever practiced Bikram Yoga (or another type of yoga in a heated room) do you notice a difference?

3.    Classes are smaller during retreats, so yoga instructors will have more time to cater to you and your needs.

4.    Going to a retreat is like taking a vacation in paradise. There is no specific timeline to follow, so you can opt to spend time alone relaxing and reflecting in between yoga sessions.

How to Join a Yoga Retreat: For all you Bikram Addicts Out There

So, for all you Bikram yogis out there, there are many retreats that specialize in Bikram Yoga. All you need to do is search for them on the internet, and sign up. Here are a few things to prepare for and expect when joining a Bikram retreat:

2.    Be sure to bring all your yoga equipment, travel documents, and identification papers, to avoid any inconvenience.

3.    Be ready to stay on a vegetarian diet for the duration of your retreat (most yogis are vegetarians), and to share a room with other participants (unless you want to spend more money).

Why Bikram Yoga is Practice in a Heated Room

bikram yoga hot
Bikram yoga is literally hot. During bikram yoga classes, you enter a room that has a temperature of 40 degrees Celsius. That’s hotter than the typical summer day on a tropical country.

The heated room is what differentiates bikram yoga from other kinds of yoga. The room is heated because heat quickly relaxes your muscles making your muscles more flexible. Do you notice why we use heat lotions or hot topical creams as first aid for sore muscles? It’s because heat relaxes our muscles. It expand our muscles and make them ready for longer stretches.

When the room is hot and we’re performing yoga poses, we sweat a lot. The sweating causes the toxins to get out of our body. After the heavy sweating of yoga , we feel exhilarated and light primarily because the toxins that have been in our body for a long time was excreted.

When our ligaments, tissues and muscles are heated, they tend to be stronger against injuries. When we are about to perform a physical activity such as jogging or dancing, we are advised to perform warm-up exercises. Warm-up exercises will do just that to our muscles—warm them up and this will help us prevent injuries.

Bikram yoga started in India and the temperature in India which is very high is makes the yogis there very flexible. This is why a heated room is used for this kind of yoga. It provides the natural temperature that the yogis in India get and the temperature helps in the deep stretches of the yoga asanas.
