wynona Since the recession began, there have been many stories about how people have turned to yoga to help with unemployment. First, yoga studios saw an increase in students. Then, as unemployment numbers sky-rocketed so did retreat enrollments. Unemployment has definitely impacted the yoga community, and it does not seem to slowing down any time soon. The latest news, is that a former Bear Stearns broker, who was inspired by yoga during his time job searching, decided to completely change career paths to open a yoga studio in New York City called Yoga Vidya NYC.
It might be a bad time for the economy, but it seems like the recession is giving people more time for yoga. In my book, that’s a big positive! What do you think?

levis25 At $18 a class in some cities, it’s no surprise that yoga studios are often a hub for financially secure spiritual seekers. It’s the high price tags associated with yoga classes, retreats, and trendy yoga clothes that has some folks making sweeping generalizations about how yoga is a yuppie activity.
However, there’s no denying the sector of the yoga community working to change all of that. A recent article in the Washington Post features several ways yoga teachers are donating their time and energy to help low-income students, HIV/AIDS patients, cancer patients, and more by offering free classes.
It’s nothing new. Those of us who are involved in the yoga community know that there are amazing people selflessly sharing yoga with under-served populations all the time. I’d love to hear your stories! What programs are available in your neighborhoods that offer yoga to people who might never set foot in a studio otherwise?

kate Unless you’ve been living in a cave lately (a rent-free cave) you probably know we’re in a recession. And unless you’ve been living in that cave AND on an incredibly long media fast, you know that people are cutting back on their expenses. It seems like I hear some economist tells me how to more effectively hoard my money every five seconds. However, the same economists seem to be stumped about why we yogis keep spending our money on pricey yoga classes and (gasp!) pricier yoga mats. It’s as if they’re saying, I know these yogis say yoga keeps them calm through the chaos, but what is the real, economic reason?”
A recent Time article cites polls, yoga studios, and yoga teachers to come to this sweeping conclusion:
“Yogis are yuppies. And if there’s one thing yuppies do, it’s copycat their brethren. So as more stressed-out young professionals flood the yoga studios and see other people with comfy Manduka mats supporting their glutes, they’re bound to buy the pricey products too. Look at me: I’ve got a Manduka; I’m totally into yoga.”
